The student experience looks flat. Split it three ways and it isn't.
The overall student experience sits near 8 out of 10 and barely moves all year. That steadiness averages together three domains moving very differently: the personal experience swings hardest into every exam window, while the social fabric barely flinches.
The calmest number in the data
Take the mean of every check-in answer, on a 0 to 10 scale, and the student experience sits in a tight band near 8 for the whole academic year. This year’s line sits almost on top of last year’s.
Composite 0 to 10 index, the mean of all check-in answers, finished responses. Two academic years overlaid.
Read on its own, that flat line says the experience is stable and there is nothing to see. That reading is wrong. The steadiness is an average of things moving in opposite directions, and the average hides the part you can actually act on.
Split it three ways and the line comes apart
The overall number resolves into three domains: the Personal experience (how students cope, balance and stay motivated), the Social experience (belonging, relationships, classroom climate) and the Academic experience (teaching, content, feedback and relevance). Plotted separately, the one flat line becomes three that move differently.
Monthly means for the three domains, 2025/26, 0 to 10.
Social and Academic both average 8.0 and hold roughly steady across the year. Personal wellbeing averages 7.6, sits lowest, and swings most, softening hardest through the December and April exam windows. The pressure of the academic calendar lands on the personal domain, the one that holds stress, confidence, time and finances, while the social fabric barely flinches. It is the same assessment moment, felt three different ways.
What it means for institutions
-
Don’t steer by the average. A stable composite is the least informative number you have. The signal is in the domains and the topics beneath it, not the headline.
-
Watch the personal domain around exams. It is the domain that bends, and it bends on a schedule you already know. A check-in placed before the December and April windows surfaces who is struggling while there is still time to act, not after.
-
Protect what holds. The social fabric is resilient here, and belonging is one of the strongest buffers students have against academic pressure. Steady is not the same as unimportant. It is worth protecting.
How we measure it
The index is the mean of every finished check-in answer, scored 0 to 100 and rescaled to 0 to 10, aggregated by month and academic year. The domain figures roll every answer up to its domain on the same basis. We report the within-year shape and the year-on-year comparison rather than a single line back to 2020, because the responding base has grown from a handful of institutions to hundreds, so a multi-year average would track who joined more than how students feel. Cross-institution aggregate; no single institution identified; minimum group size applied.
